There are still bugs with the Barbarian class in Diablo II

by Travis Johnston on Feb.10, 2010, under Development

Ten years later I started re-playing Diablo II again as a way to slow down my outrage of still waiting for Diablo III to come out.  What blew my mind was over the course of said 10 years and who knows who many patches all the pain and suffering is still in there.  They fixed some exploits and other things.  But the 2 biggest bugs that leaves the Barbarian class in that frustrating situation of doing the naked body run are still there.

Super WTF Barbarian bugs:

  1. Whirlwind just stays in one spot if your destination is over an dropped object or just outside anything considered a wall.  100′s of monsters closing in on your location and you want to cut your way out of the crowd.  Opps if your escape destination happens to be a dropped blue Mana bottle you will still there twirling like a ballerina until 50 monsters beat you to death.  So much fun…
  2. Related is your jump attack just goes straight up and down if your destination is over an dropped object or outside anything considered a wall.  Need to jump out of the fray and into a door way so you can control the crowd.  Oh shit if you killed anything in that doorway on your way in then chances are there are a bunch of dropped things so instead you jump high into the sky and every monster is taking aim on you as you gracefully fall back to earth.  Nothing better than waiting for your eventual death…

Since both of these moves are considered attacks for the barbarian class how is it possible this is not considered a bug and fixed yet.  You can drop kick fallen angles trying to enslave the human race but if a ring is below you then can not jump there and are just going to do jumping jacks instead.  Any other class if your attack target is an inanimate object it does not care and just fires away.  Not so lucky for the barbarians…

For the love of all gods that I do not believe in, please blizzard fix this in the next version, my sanity can not take any more of this…

Fixing your bugs / issues now and not later

by Travis Johnston on Mar.18, 2009, under Lessons

Every good programmer knows you have to track down all the crashes right away or the errors will start masking each other and it will be hard to know what change set is causing what errors.  Even worse is suddenly you might have a really big problem in there some were but you will not know it for a long time because there is to much noise.  This is really a life lesson that can and should be applied to everything.  My wife did not see this as a fundamental truth that must be followed and has been letting fear stop her from fixing a lot of small problems.

Well after living in moderate pain for years it finally became bad enough that it outweigh her fear of surgery and she finally decided to fix the growing stack of pain inducing problems.  Luck would shine on her as on the way to the do the surgery the doctor decides to go with a horizontal cut instead of the discussed vertical cut.  When they cut her open to remove the other pain inducing growths they find a tumor the size of a fist right there on the abdominal wall.  Opps, stop the surgery, biopsy it and make sure it is not dangerous to remove.  Luckily the screen came back not super cancer filled and they could freeze it and remove it.  So after a 1.5 hour detour the rest of the surgery went fine.  We are still waiting on a full biopsy screen to ensure the whole thing was benign and she is safe.  But so far so good.

Talk about getting saved by pure dumb luck.  Had she ignored the pain a little longer who knows how big it would have grown before she realized it was not part of what she knew about and something much bigger and worse.  If the doctor had went with the original plan they would not have run into it and it would have been left behind.  If it had been left behind it would have grown for at least another 2 months before they realized the pain was not just left of from recovering from surgery and something knew.  If it is indeed benign now, who knows if it would have still been in two months.  Belly fat is the most hormone rich cells and is known to turn from benign to cancer the quickest of them all.  All this because every time she went in and they did a screening, they saw tons things that they thought they already knew about and completely overlooked the new dangerous stuff.

Fix your noice right away so you always know what is really going on…
